Professional Translation for Certified & Official Use

Soror Language Services assists individuals, businesses and organisations requiring professional translations for submission to government departments, universities, employers, courts, immigration authorities and other institutions.

The exact type of certification required depends on the receiving authority, destination country and intended use of the document.

CERTIFIED TRANSLATION

Certified Translation

A certified translation is prepared for formal or official use and includes the appropriate certification applicable to the translation service being provided.

It may be requested for immigration, education, employment, legal, administrative, financial and business purposes.

SWORN TRANSLATION

Sworn Translation

Where a sworn translation is specifically required, SLS can arrange translation by a sworn translator registered with a High Court of South Africa, subject to the language combination and the requirements of the receiving authority.

The receiving institution ultimately determines whether it requires a sworn, certified, notarised or another form of official translation.

Before ordering, tell us where your document will be submitted

Certification requirements are determined by the organisation receiving the document. Please tell us the destination country, receiving authority and purpose of submission.

This helps us assess the appropriate translation service and whether additional authentication may be required.

Authentication & Apostille

Sworn Translation, High Court Authentication & Apostille

Some international submissions require more than translation alone. The required procedure depends on the destination country and the authority receiving the documents.

SWORN TRANSLATOR

High Court Registered Sworn Translators

Where a sworn translation is required, the translation can be prepared and certified by a sworn translator registered with a High Court of South Africa, subject to language availability and the requirements of the receiving authority.

The translator's certification accompanies the sworn translation in the appropriate format.

FURTHER AUTHENTICATION

Authentication & Apostille Requirements

For some destination countries, a sworn translation may require further authentication before an apostille or another legalisation process can be completed.

The exact sequence should be confirmed before proceeding because requirements can differ between countries and institutions.

Translation and apostille are not the same service

A translation does not automatically become apostilled merely because it is certified or sworn. Authentication, apostille, notarisation and legalisation are separate processes.

If your receiving authority has issued instructions, send them to us with your documents so that the requirements can be reviewed before the work begins.

Not Sure Which Type of Translation You Need?

Send us the document and tell us the country, receiving authority and purpose of submission. We can review the information and advise you on the appropriate translation service based on the requirements provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Certified Translation FAQs

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a professional translation prepared with the appropriate certification for formal or official use. The exact requirements depend on the organisation receiving the document.

What is a sworn translation?

In South Africa, a sworn translation may be prepared and certified by a sworn translator registered with a High Court of South Africa. Whether a sworn translation is required depends on the receiving authority and the purpose of submission.

What is the difference between certified and sworn translation?

“Certified translation” is a broad term used for translations prepared for formal use. A sworn translation is a specific form of official translation prepared by a sworn translator. Different authorities use different terminology and may require different forms of certification.

What documents can you translate?

We translate birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, police clearances, academic records, immigration documents, legal documents, financial records, business documents and many other types of official material.

Can you translate Afrikaans documents into English?

Yes. Afrikaans-to-English translation is available for documents including divorce decrees, certificates, police records, military records, academic documents and other official South African documents.

Can you translate documents for immigration purposes?

Yes. We assist with civil certificates, police clearances, qualifications and other supporting documents used for visa, residence, citizenship, employment and immigration applications.

Do I need a certified or sworn translation?

That depends on the receiving authority. Tell us the destination country, receiving institution and purpose of submission so that the requirements can be assessed based on the information available.

Will my certified translation be accepted everywhere?

No translation format should automatically be assumed to be accepted by every authority. Requirements differ between institutions and countries. The receiving authority should confirm the form of translation and certification it requires.

Does a certified or sworn translation include an apostille?

No. Translation, authentication, apostille, notarisation and legalisation are separate processes. If an apostille or further authentication is required, tell us the destination country and receiving authority before proceeding.

Can a sworn translation require High Court authentication?

Depending on the destination country and receiving authority, further authentication of a sworn translation may be required before an apostille or another legalisation process. Requirements should be confirmed for the specific submission.

Do I need to send the original document?

Clear scanned or photographed copies are usually sufficient for quotation and initial assessment. If an original is required for a specific certification or authentication process, this can be confirmed before proceeding.

Do you translate bank statements and financial documents?

Yes. Bank statements, financial statements, payslips and supporting financial records can be translated where required for immigration, legal, business or administrative purposes.

Can you translate degrees and academic transcripts?

Yes. We translate degrees, diplomas, matric certificates, professional qualifications, transcripts and other academic records.

How long does a certified translation take?

Turnaround depends on the language combination, document length, complexity, certification requirements and translator availability. The expected completion date is confirmed with your quotation.

Are my documents handled confidentially?

Yes. Client documents and project information are handled confidentially throughout the quotation, translation and delivery process.

Can you courier the original certified translation?

Yes. Where an original certified or sworn translation is required, collection or courier delivery within South Africa can be arranged.
