What Soror Language Services Does for You
Soror Language Services provides a private assistance service for clients who already hold documents that may require Apostille, authentication or legalisation for use abroad. We assess the case before original documents are sent so that the likely route and supporting requirements can be identified first.
Depending on the applicable route, our assistance can include document review, preparation, submission, collection and return. Where translation is required, SLS can also coordinate the relevant sworn or certified translation as part of the wider document process.
DIRCO does not charge for its own legalisation service, and clients may submit eligible documents directly. SLS charges separately for its private assistance with assessment and document handling. We explain the proposed work and provide a quotation before you decide whether to use our service.

DOCUMENT LEGALISATION ROUTES
Different Documents May Follow Different Routes
There is no single legalisation process for every document. The appropriate route depends on the document, how it was issued and the country in which it will be used.
DIRCO Route
Certain eligible South African public documents may require processing through DIRCO before they can be used abroad. SLS can assist with preparing, submitting and collecting documents through this route where applicable.
High Court Route
Certain notarised, sworn-translated or privately executed documents may require processing through the relevant High Court. We assist with identifying and coordinating the appropriate route.
Notarial Documents
Some private documents may first require execution, certification or verification by a Public Notary before progressing to the relevant authority.
Qualification Verification
Educational documents may require verification by the appropriate South African education authority before proceeding to legalisation.
Embassy or Consular Requirements
Some destination countries require additional steps after South African authentication. We can assist with identifying the relevant sequence.
Translation Before Legalisation
Where translation is required before legalisation, SLS can arrange the appropriate sworn or certified translation as part of the project.

HOW WE HANDLE A REAL ENQUIRY
South African Birth Certificate for Use in the UAE
A client sent an original South African birth certificate to SLS by courier for use in the United Arab Emirates. This is the route we follow, subject to the document being accepted at each stage. For this UAE route, DIRCO issues a Certificate of Authentication.
The steps we coordinate
- After receiving the original certificate, we submit it to DIRCO on our regular Wednesday submission day.
- After DIRCO confirms completion, we collect the document and its Certificate of Authentication under the applicable collection arrangement.
- We then take the authenticated document through VFS Global for the UAE Embassy attestation stage. This stage normally takes around three days before the digital attestation is received.
- Once the original document is returned, the client can collect it from SLS or choose courier delivery for an additional fee.
What this example shows
SLS can coordinate the hand-off between DIRCO certification and the UAE attestation process, while keeping the client informed about collection or return of the original document.
The route and timing depend on the document, destination, authority requirements and whether any correction is needed. We assess each enquiry and provide a quotation before work begins.
A COMPLETED CLIENT CASE
South African Medical Report for Use in Mozambique
A client provided an original medical report signed by a doctor registered in South Africa for use in Mozambique. SLS coordinated authentication by the professional council, DIRCO and the Mozambican Consulate in Johannesburg.
The steps in this case
- We paid the prescribed fee and submitted the original report to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). We collected it after HPCSA authentication was complete.
- We submitted the HPCSA-authenticated report to DIRCO on Wednesday and collected it with DIRCO's Certificate of Authentication after DIRCO confirmed it was ready.
- We took the DIRCO-authenticated document to the Mozambican Consulate in Johannesburg for consular certification.
- After consular processing, the completed document was ready for client collection or delivery by the agreed method.
Why the route matters
The doctor's signature alone did not complete the international document process. HPCSA authentication came before DIRCO's Certificate of Authentication and the destination country's consular step.

What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a certificate issued by a competent authority to authenticate the origin of a public document for use in a country that accepts Apostilles. The document type and destination country determine which authority and steps apply.
Does Soror Language Services issue Apostilles or Authentication Certificates?
No. SLS provides private assistance with assessment and document handling. DIRCO, the relevant High Court or another competent authority issues the official certificate for the applicable route.
Can I submit my documents directly instead of using SLS?
Yes. DIRCO's own legalisation service is free, and it provides direct-submission options for eligible documents. SLS charges for optional private help with assessing the route and handling the steps you agree to in our quotation.
How does the SLS legalisation assistance service work?

How do I know which authority should process my documents?

Where the applicable authority and process allow third-party submission or collection, SLS can assist with these administrative steps on the client's behalf.
Can you assist with documents requiring academic verification first?
Yes. The verification body depends on the qualification. A South African degree may need SAQA verification; a school certificate may need Umalusi or the Department of Basic Education, depending on the document and issue date. We check the sequence before advising on legalisation.
Can you assist clients throughout South Africa?
Yes. Initial assessment can usually be completed electronically. Where original documents are required, an appropriate delivery or courier arrangement can then be agreed.
Do original documents need to be submitted?
For some routes, yes. DIRCO requires the original South African birth, marriage or death certificate issued by Home Affairs. Other documents have different requirements. We begin with a clear scan and advise when the original needs to be sent.
How long does the legalisation process take?
The time depends on the route and any steps required before submission. We identify those stages during assessment and share the available estimate when quoting. Authority processing times are outside SLS's control.
Can translation be arranged before legalisation if required?
Yes. Where translation forms part of the applicable document process, SLS can arrange professional sworn or certified translation as part of the project.
