Certified Thai Translation

Thai certificates and other official documents may require certified or sworn translation depending on the receiving authority and jurisdiction.

Tell us where the Thai translation will be submitted

Certification requirements depend on the document type, receiving authority and country in which the translation will be used.

Requirements in South Africa may differ from those applied by a Thai authority, embassy, university, court or another institution overseas.

Translation, apostille, authentication and legalisation are different processes. Translation itself does not automatically provide an apostille or legalisation.

Where possible, send us the receiving authority's instructions together with the complete document.

Thai Writing System

Thai Script, Names & Romanisation

Thai uses its own writing system. Official documents may combine Thai script with English names, Arabic numerals, Thai numerals, government stamps, signatures and handwritten entries.

Thai Names in English

A Thai personal or place name can sometimes be represented in Roman letters in more than one way.

For official translation, the English spelling shown in the person's passport or recognised identity document should normally be followed where available.

Do Not Invent Romanisation

When an established official English spelling exists, it is preferable to maintain consistency rather than create a new Romanised version of the name.

Providing a passport or existing official English-language record can therefore be useful.

Documents from Thailand

Thai Government & Official Documents

Documents issued in Thailand may contain authority-specific terminology, seals, registration information and dates that need to be interpreted within the Thai administrative context.

Thailand Civil Records Police Records Academic Records Legal Documents International Use

Government & District Records

Civil and administrative documents may contain references to district offices, government departments and other Thai authorities.

Send all pages so that the document can be understood as a complete record rather than as isolated text.

Bilingual Thai-English Documents

Some Thai official, academic and business documents may already contain certain information in English.

Existing English wording, names and institutional titles should be considered when producing the translation.

Official Dates

Thai Buddhist Era Dates

Thai official documents frequently use Buddhist Era years, while international applications often use Gregorian calendar years.

Calendar Context Matters

The date should first be read exactly as it appears in the source document and interpreted according to the calendar being used.

A Buddhist Era year should not simply be mistaken for the equivalent Gregorian year.

Transparent Date Conversion

Where an English translation needs to show a Gregorian equivalent, the relationship should be presented clearly and consistently.

Authority-specific instructions should be followed where they specify how dates must appear.
