Tell us where the Farsi translation will be submitted
Certification requirements depend on the document type, receiving authority and country in which the translation will be used.
Requirements in South Africa may differ from those applied by an Iranian authority, embassy, university, court or another institution overseas.
Translation, apostille, authentication and legalisation are separate processes. Translation itself does not automatically provide an apostille or legalisation.
Where possible, send us the receiving authority's instructions together with the complete document.
Already Have the Persian Document?
Send us a clear scan or photograph of every page and tell us where the translation will be submitted. We can confirm the language, assess the document and provide a quotation.
Persian Script, Names & Transliteration
Modern Persian in Iran is written from right to left using a Persian form of the Arabic-derived script, with letters and spelling conventions specific to Persian.
Persian Names in English
Personal names written in Persian script can sometimes appear in more than one Roman-letter spelling.
For official translations, consistency with the spelling appearing in a passport or recognised identity document is important. Where available, provide that document with the source.
Persian & Arabic Script Are Not the Same Language
Persian and Arabic use closely related writing systems, but they are different languages with different vocabulary, grammar and some different characters.
A document written in Persian should therefore not automatically be treated as Arabic merely because the scripts look similar.
Farsi, Persian, Dari & Tajik
“Persian” is the broader English language name, while “Farsi” is commonly used for Iranian Persian. Related Persian varieties are also used outside Iran.
Iranian Persian / Farsi
Farsi commonly refers to the Persian variety used in Iran and is the principal focus of this page.
Dari
Dari is a closely related variety of Persian used in Afghanistan. A Dari document should be identified as Dari rather than automatically classified as Iranian Farsi.
Tajik
Tajik is another closely related Persian variety and is normally written in Cyrillic script in Tajikistan. It should be treated as a separate language requirement.
Iranian Civil, Academic & Official Documents
Iranian documents may contain Persian text together with numbers, seals, stamps, handwriting, registration details and occasional English wording.
Issuing Authority & Document Type Matter
Civil, police, academic and legal documents can use terminology specific to the Iranian institution or authority that issued them.
Send all pages, including stamps and annotations, so the complete record can be assessed.
Names, Numbers & Official Details
Persian documents may combine Persian script with Persian or Arabic numerals, registration numbers, seals and handwritten information.
These details should be reproduced carefully and distinguished from the translated English wording.
Persian / Solar Hijri Calendar Dates
Iranian official documents commonly use the Solar Hijri calendar, also known as the Persian calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar normally used in South Africa.
Calendar Identification Matters
A year appearing on an Iranian document should not automatically be read as a Gregorian year.
The source document and issuing context must first establish which calendar is being used.
Transparent Date Conversion
Where a Gregorian equivalent is useful or required, it should be shown transparently and consistently rather than silently replacing the date in the source.
Any specific instructions from the receiving institution should be followed.
